What are the Government Solar Rebates in ACT?

Are you a resident of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) looking to embrace solar power for your home? Wondering how you can save money while making the switch to renewable energy? Let’s delve into the realm of government solar rebates in ACT and discover how you can harness the sun’s energy while keeping more money in your pocket.

The ACT government is helping residents offset the upfront cost of installing solar.

Understanding the state Government Solar Rebates in ACT

The ACT government has committed to net zero emissions by 2045 and has committed to promoting sustainability and renewable energy adoption among its residents. As part of this commitment, various government solar rebates are available to incentivise homeowners to invest in solar power systems.

Types of Government Solar Rebates in ACT

In the ACT, there used to be a fantastic opportunity known as the Next Gen Energy Storage Program. This rebate was designed to make home energy storage more affordable right from the start, giving the ACT a significant edge over other regions. Running from 2016 until 11 January 2023, the program successfully reached its goal of 5,000 battery installations. Unfortunately, this means the rebate is no longer accessible. While there’s currently no replacement in sight, we’ll be sure to keep you informed if anything changes!

There is however the Home Energy Support Program which is a rebate designed to assist homeowners who hold an Australian Pensioner Concession or Veteran’s Affairs Gold Card in the ACT. It offers financial support of up to $5,000 for the installation of energy-efficient products and sustainable home upgrades. This includes:

  • one rebate of 50% of the total installation price, up to $2,500 for rooftop solar
  • one rebate of 50% of the total installation price, up to $2,500, for:
    • reverse cycle heating and cooling
    • hot water heat pumps
    • electric stove tops and ovens
    • ceiling insulation

In addition, the Sustainable Household Scheme while not exclusively a solar rebate program, offers interest-free loans of up to $15,000 to help homeowners cover the costs of energy-efficient upgrades. This includes investments in solar panels, battery storage systems, electric heating and cooling systems, and more.

If eligible, you can combine the Home Energy Support Program rebate with a zero-interest loan through the Sustainable Household Scheme to help with the remaining costs.
