What are the Government Solar Rebates in TAS?

As in many other Australian states, it may be beneficial for Tasmanian (TAS) residents to install a solar power system on their property. With government solar rebates in TAS and solar panels on your roof, you can produce your own electricity thanks to sunlight.

An investment like this can not only be beneficial for the environment and reduce your carbon footprint, but it can also lower your energy costs.

Although the initial cost may seem high, a solar panel system can be affordable for many residents thanks to the solar rebates in TAS.

In some Australian states and territories, you can not only receive a rebate from the government but also from the state itself. There might also be other incentives waiting for you. So, what are the solar rebates in TAS? Let’s take a closer look.

Government solar rebates in TAS (federal rebate)

The Australian government is making it more affordable for Australians to invest in solar panel systems through a financial rebate. The size of the rebate may vary from state to state and will be defined by the number of small-scale technology certificates (STC) you collect by installing the system.

Every STC will have a given value, and one STC is given per MWh your system will produce from installation until 2030. Usually, the system installer will give you the rebate directly. You might also sell your STCs on the open market.

Tasmania is in STC zone 4, which means that the rebate you receive is smaller than in zones 1 to 3.  For this reason, you will receive a lower number of STCs compared to the other zones.

As a Tasmanian, your financial rebate is therefore lower than for residents in areas like Darwin, Sydney and Perth.

Why is the rebate lower in TAS compared to many other states?

There are several reasons why the rebate in Tasmania is lower than in other Australian states. Besides the fact that you will receive fewer STCs because of the low STC zone, Tasmania is considered a relatively small market for solar energy systems.

It is also worth noting the water divide between Tasmania and the rest of Australia. This, combined with the relatively low population number, contributes to higher installation costs.

Some examples of solar rebates in TAS

The effectiveness and size of your solar energy system will play an important role when it comes to the amount of STCs you will collect. For a solar panel system of 1.5kW, the number of STCs will be significantly lower than for a 6.6kW system.

In these examples, you can see the number of STCs and the rebate size you can expect from different solar system sizes in Tasmania:

Solar System SizeQty STCsRebate
1.5 kW12$473
2 kW17$630
3 kW25$946
4 kW33$1,261
5 kW41$1,576
6 kW50$1,891
6.6 kW55$2,080
7 kW58$2,206
10 kW83$3,152
40 kW332$12,608
100 kW830$31,521
Current at 4.3.24 (assumes an STC price of $38/STC)

Who is eligible for the federal solar rebate scheme in TAS?

To be able to receive the government solar rebate in TAS, some requirements need to be fulfilled. First and foremost, the rebate is only eligible for small-scale energy systems of solar photovoltaic panels (and some other energy systems).

In addition to this, the system must be purchased from a retailer approved by the Clean Energy Council (CEC). The solar system should also be CEC approved.

Are there any state subsidies for solar panel systems in Tasmania?

In some Australian states, like Victoria, it is possible to receive a local state rebate in addition to the federal rebate. In TAS, this is not possible. There are no state subsidies for Tasmanians who install a solar panel system.

In other words, the government’s STC rebate is the only rebate you can receive. It is also worth mentioning that battery rebates currently do not exist in Tasmania.

Should Tasmanians invest in solar panel energy systems?

Although the government solar rebate in TAS is lower than in many other Australian states, it is a good idea to invest in a solar panel system. You can expect to lower your electricity costs, and at the same time, you are reducing your carbon footprint.

The fact that Tasmania is sunny is also a great reason to invest. But remember – you should not wait too long. The government rebate decreases every year. In 2030, it will no longer be possible to receive a solar panel rebate.
